Jeff Benway has served SFC for 25 years as a civil engineer, with specializations in unique markets.
Jeff began his SFC career providing engineering services for the wireless industry. At the advent of mobile phones, the frantic pace to establish the New England market was led by Verizon and Cellular One. In the mid 90’s, the wireless industry exploded with new carriers and tower developers. Jeff stepped up to manage these new clients and provide permitting and construction drawings for wireless communication sites throughout New England. Those clients included Omnipoint, Bechtel, General Dynamics, and Voicestream, some of those names no longer being familiar. Being a young industry, the pace of growth and change was swift. Jeff worked hard to meet challenging deadlines, and change plans frequently to satisfy new demands!
When the wireless industry cooled, Jeff took on other significant projects. Later, Jeff took lead on another major market: segmental block retaining wall design. With a background including geotechnical design, Jeff propelled SFC Engineering to be a premier designer of retaining wall systems throughout New England. His clients include block manufacturers, architects, engineers, contractors, landscape architects and landowners. Projects include small landscape walls for homeowners, and large earth retention structures for commercial developments. Jeff has designed more than 1000 segmental block retaining walls, with gravity walls as tall as 22 feet and mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls as tall as 40 feet.
Jeff has always been the great teacher both within the company helping junior staff improve, and in the academic community having served as an ad-hoc professor at UNH, teaching undergraduates how to use AutoCAD software.
Jeff is also a familiar face in the greater engineering community. He has been active in the Society of Military Engineers, and the NH Society of Professional Engineers. Jeff has assisted with the Mathcounts programs for countless years. This program promotes the math skills of high school students. Currently, Jeff devotes much of his spare time to Engineers Without Borders. This organization partners with communities in the world’s toughest places to meet their basic human needs. With EWB, Jeff has served as project lead to bring drinking water to villages in Uganda, and he has helped to mentor EWB student chapters at UNH, Harvard and Columbia University.
Throughout his career, Jeff has demonstrated unselfishness and competence. Congratulations to Jeff on 25 years with SFC, and continued success in his engineering career.
